CLARKSTON WEIGHT LOSS THE OLD-FASHIONED WAY

A one-year weight loss program can be just as effective in helping obese people lose weight as surgery, according to a new study published by German researchers in the International Journal of Obesity. The OPTIFAST program used in the study included: lifestyle changes, a low-calorie diet, behavioral therapy, group meetings, nutritional counseling, and exercise.

The initial weigh-in average was 247 pounds for women and 301 pounds for men. Six out of ten participants who lasted the duration of the program lost 53 percent of their excess weight, which was compared to 60 percent for those who had weight loss surgery. As a result, participants demonstrated improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol levels, sugar levels and overall quality of life. On average, women committed to the program dropped 43 pounds and committed men lost 57 pounds, although 40 percent of study participants dropped out of the program altogether.

It seems weight regain is the Achilles’ heel of weight loss programs. Unfortunately, even those who successfully completed the program regained three-quarters of their weight after three years. Researchers were disappointed to see all the weight creep back on over time – which is less likely to happen following surgery, they add. For this reason, people hoping to see enduring Clarkston weight loss will need a motivational program that continues indefinitely. However, a long-term Clarkston weight loss program comparable to OPTIFAST would be “very costly,” researchers concluded, which makes it a less viable option for the average American.

Perhaps a better option is to find an affordable Clarkston weight loss program like a boot camp, where individuals get a consultation with a personal trainer and regular group classes aimed at keeping workouts varied, intense and productive. Individuals receive nutritional counseling and lifestyle tips with their program as well, so the best possible results can be achieved. Like in the obesity study, a number of people will probably find that boot camps are “not for them,” but those who do enjoy the accountability, the outdoor environment and the camaraderie of a group setting will find they have a new Clarkston weight loss technique for life.

Weight loss is a top priority for Clarkston’s overweight or obese. Carrying a few extra pounds doesn’t just look unsightly: it’s linked to chronic disease, heart disease, added health care spending, and premature death. Clarkston weight loss surgery isn’t the ideal option either, as the cost is prohibitively expensive for some and the potential for complications too risky for others. As it turns out, weight loss is just a start for local residents. It takes dedication and organization to keep the weight off in the long run.
