GET COMFORTABLE AT THE GYM WITH A WHITE LAKE PERSONAL TRAINER

It’s your first day at the gym. What equipment should you use? How do you use said equipment? Where are the towels? Where are the fitness classes? How much weight should you try lifting? There are so many unknown variables that you may find yourself standing around scratching your head a lot. Then the paranoia creeps in that other people may be watching your clueless debacle and wondering what your deal is. The best way to combat that “newbie” sensation is to ask a White Lake personal trainer to show you around and familiarize you with the lay of the land.

You may not want a full-blown White Lake personal trainer package that involves signing up for set amount of months and having someone stand over you while you workout. But you can sign up for a couple of sessions to test your current fitness levels, discuss nutrition, talk about your goals, and learn how to use all the equipment the gym has to offer – from the weight machines to the elliptical trainer. Often times an initial orientation is even free.

As your White Lake personal trainer shows you around, keep in mind that the gym is a place for all different sizes, shapes and fitness levels. Don’t feel intimidated by the “muscle men” or “sleek Sheilas” working out around you. Everyone has to start somewhere. In fact, you’ll likely notice a few “regulars” who come in with bubble butts and drop all their excess baggage over a relatively short period of time.

When you’re brand new, it is very important that you be unafraid of trying new things. Take as many group exercise classes as you can. You never know what instructor or exercises might strike your fancy and make your workouts seem much less painful! Try the elliptical, the treadmill, the Cybex, the rowing machine, and the stair climber. Do both free weights and pulley weight machines. Go out on a limb and hire a White Lake personal trainer to teach you form, technique, and new exercises you may have never considered before.

You may also try going to the gym with a buddy. Often, just having the moral support of another person will give you something else to focus upon, rather than your own sense of embarrassment.  Another effective way to get over the newcomer awkwardness is to try visiting during off-peak hours (like mid-morning, mid-afternoon, or late-night), which may also make you feel more at ease during your first few months at a new health club.
